As a national museum in Canada, we align with the federal government’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions across government operations by 2050. In practical terms, this requires reducing the Museum’s direct emissions by 90%, while also lowering indirect emissions and meeting federal waste-diversion targets.
In parallel, the Museum is mandated to publicly report annually on its progress using internationally recognized sustainability reporting frameworks, including the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). To support these objectives, environmental sustainability has been integrated into the Museum’s governance structures, internal policies, risk management, and reporting systems.
The Museum has been measuring and publicly reporting its environmental footprint since 2025. Our long-term objective is to embed environmental sustainability across all aspects of operations, ensuring a coordinated approach to achieving our emissions-reduction and waste-diversion targets. As a public-facing institution, we also aim to embed environmental themes in our external programming. By joining the Climate Toolkit Community, we hope to share our experience and learn from peer institutions, contributing to environmental sustainability across the global arts and culture sector.
