MoMA is dedicated to building sustainable futures at the Museum and beyond. MoMA’s sustainability journey grew from a foundation of staff interests, which led to operational adjustments in 2008, and has continued to build momentum through the award of LEED Platinum certification for the Museum’s renovation and expansion in 2019. In 2025, we have reduced our building emissions by 20% and cut our waste in half. We are continuing to strive towards a diversion rate of 75% from the landfill in 2030 and to further reduce our energy consumption to align with the goals of the groundbreaking Climate Mobilization Act in New York City and the Local Law benchmarks by 2030.
MoMA is committed to leadership in sustainability as both an institution for public education and a community of passionate and dedicated individuals. The Museum is actively transforming its building systems and operations to limit energy consumption and emissions, striving towards achieving zero waste with the resources it consumes, breaking new ground with related exhibitions and programs, and engaging communities in conversation while taking action together to help safeguard our environment now and for generations to come.
MoMA wishes to align with other cultural institutions which are committed to taking an active role in their climate impacts.
