Denver Zoos bed\u00f6mning av v\u00e4xthusgaser 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sommaren 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/denverzoo.org\/\">Denver Zoo<\/a> samarbetade med <a href=\"https:\/\/biz.colostate.edu\/academics\/graduate-programs\/mba\/impact-mba\">Colorado State Universitys (CSU) Impact MBA<\/a> Corporate Sustainability Fellowship-program f\u00f6r att genomf\u00f6ra en omfattande utv\u00e4rdering av v\u00e4xthusgaser i hela djurparken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CSU Impact MBA-studenten Miki Salamon fick i uppdrag att leda arbetet och utf\u00f6ra en v\u00e4xthusgasanalys av Denver Zoos Scope 1-, 2- och 3-utsl\u00e4pp. Teamet p\u00e5 Denver Zoo ins\u00e5g att de hade en m\u00f6jlighet att ta itu med sina klimat\u00e5taganden bortom 2025 och uppdatera sin <a href=\"https:\/\/denverzoo.org\/sustainability-policy\/\">Milj\u00f6ledningssystem<\/a> (EMS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00e5let med projektet var att f\u00f6r\u00e4ndra det \u00f6vergripande t\u00e4nkandet kring Denver Zoos globala p\u00e5verkan genom att anv\u00e4nda GHG-data f\u00f6r att skapa nya minskningsm\u00e5l och rikta in sig p\u00e5 enskilda omr\u00e5den. Ledningen ins\u00e5g dock att det fanns en m\u00f6jlighet att ta itu med det komplexa fokusomr\u00e5det energi, som kan vara det sv\u00e5raste och dyraste klimatomr\u00e5det att ta itu med.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ett m\u00e5l f\u00f6r energiminskning p\u00e5 hela campus antogs i slutet av 2019 - precis i b\u00f6rjan av covid-19-pandemin. DZ:s personal och ledning var intresserade av att se vilka utsl\u00e4pp som orsakades av djursk\u00f6tseln, s\u00e5 Salamon best\u00e4mde sig f\u00f6r att ta itu med det.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Omfattning 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6r <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/scope_2_guidance\">Scope 2-utsl\u00e4pp<\/a> - t.ex. utsl\u00e4pp fr\u00e5n ink\u00f6pt el - Salamon tittade p\u00e5 deras ink\u00f6pta el fr\u00e5n Xcel Energy, Denver Zoos prim\u00e4ra energileverant\u00f6r.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vid Scope 2-analys finns det vanligtvis tv\u00e5 ber\u00e4kningsmetoder. F\u00f6r Denver Zoo, som ligger i Rocky Mountain-regionen, tillhandah\u00e5ller Xcel Energy specifika utsl\u00e4ppsfaktorer eftersom de arbetar med f\u00f6rnybara m\u00e5l.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoo slutade med att anv\u00e4nda ber\u00e4kningar fr\u00e5n b\u00e5da metoderna f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 j\u00e4mf\u00f6relsen, men det antal som faktiskt rapporteras kommer att vara den marknadsbaserade faktorn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Omfattning 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6r <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/scope-3-inventory-guidance#:~:text=Scope%203%20emissions%20are%20the,scope%201%20and%202%20boundary.\">Scope 3-utsl\u00e4pp<\/a> - t.ex. utsl\u00e4pp som h\u00e4rr\u00f6r fr\u00e5n tillg\u00e5ngar som inte \u00e4gs eller kontrolleras av institutet, men som indirekt p\u00e5verkar organisationens <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/standards\/scope-3-standard\">v\u00e4rdekedja<\/a> - Denver Zoo beslutade att delvis ta itu med flera kategorier, bland annat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aff\u00e4rsresor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pendling f\u00f6r personal och volont\u00e4rer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>G\u00e4stresa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transport av djur<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avfall som uppkommer i verksamheten<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upphandling av djurfoder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Salamon tittade p\u00e5 m\u00e5nga olika former av resor till och fr\u00e5n campus, n\u00e4mligen anst\u00e4lldas pendling (vilket inkluderar personal och volont\u00e4rer), aff\u00e4rsresor och g\u00e4stresor. G\u00e4stresor \u00e4r en kategori som inte \u00e4r obligatorisk att rapportera, men som \u00e4nd\u00e5 utg\u00f6r en stor del av aff\u00e4rsverksamheten. \"Denver Zoo har en mycket omfattande demografisk unders\u00f6kning av g\u00e4ster\", s\u00e4ger Salamon. \"De g\u00f6r en unders\u00f6kning vartannat \u00e5r och det fanns massor av data d\u00e4r. Tanken var att se varifr\u00e5n m\u00e4nniskor kommer och vilka utsl\u00e4pp som uppst\u00e5r i samband med bes\u00f6ken.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denver Zoo ville ocks\u00e5 fokusera p\u00e5 f\u00f6rflyttningar och transporter av djur eftersom en stor del av djurtransporterna sker under \u00e5ret (2013 f\u00f6rdes till exempel en elefant till djurparken fr\u00e5n Belgien). \u00c4ven om detta var en kategori som inte var specifikt f\u00f6reskriven eller kr\u00e4vd, ans\u00e5g Salamon att det var viktigt att ta upp djurparkens <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-12\/Chapter4.pdf\">Kategori 4: Transport och distribution uppstr\u00f6ms<\/a> standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De \u00e5terst\u00e5ende kategorierna var slutligen avfall som genereras i verksamheten och upphandling, som \u00e4r en stor fr\u00e5ga p\u00e5 djurparken (och i de flesta organisationer) och tenderar att vara omfattande och spretig. Salamon kunde av denna anledning inte genomf\u00f6ra hela analysen, utan best\u00e4mde sig f\u00f6r att fokusera mer sn\u00e4vt p\u00e5 upphandlingen i samband med Denver Zoos djurfoder- och nutritionsteam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Datainsamling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salamon bokade in m\u00f6ten med olika medarbetare p\u00e5 Denver Zoo under hela sommaren och beg\u00e4rde in de olika datafl\u00f6den som kr\u00e4vdes f\u00f6r att genomf\u00f6ra v\u00e4xthusgasrevisionen. Salamon s\u00e4ger att hon hade tur eftersom de flesta uppgifterna redan hade sammanst\u00e4llts och kunde h\u00e4mtas relativt enkelt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ett stort kalkylblad f\u00f6r energi hade redan sammanst\u00e4llts med totalsummor, kilowattimmar och megawattimmar per byggnad. N\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller flottans resor gick Salamon igenom kilometerr\u00e4kningarna f\u00f6r att fastst\u00e4lla utsl\u00e4ppen fr\u00e5n djurparkens transporter. N\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller aff\u00e4rsresor bad hon chefsassistenten att ta fram uppgifter fr\u00e5n chefernas resejournaler. Salamon tr\u00e4ffade ocks\u00e5 djurparkens chef f\u00f6r f\u00e4ltv\u00e5rd, som \u00e4r mycket engagerad i h\u00e5llbarhetsfr\u00e5gor - hon kunde ta fram siffror om flygresor, antal anst\u00e4llda som reste, vart de \u00e5kte, hur l\u00e4nge de var d\u00e4r osv. F\u00f6r de anst\u00e4lldas resor hade en enk\u00e4t f\u00f6r personalens pendling redan skapats, och Salamon skapade en annan enk\u00e4t f\u00f6r att samla in uppgifter om volont\u00e4rernas pendling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Djurinformationen var s\u00e4rskilt intressant att sp\u00e5ra\", s\u00e4ger Salamon. \"Denver Zoo anv\u00e4nder sig av en s\u00e5 kallad 'registrar', som kan h\u00e4mta alla typer av data som jag \u00e4r intresserad av. Jag fick ocks\u00e5 ett inloggningsl\u00f6senord till djurparkens sp\u00e5rningsprogram: tillg\u00e5ng till alla v\u00e5ra djurfiler, uppgifter om deras vikt, anteckningar och det dagliga infl\u00f6det av data - ungef\u00e4r som p\u00e5 ett sjukhus d\u00e4r man f\u00f6r register \u00f6ver h\u00e4lsoprofiler.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En av djurparkens koordinatorer hade redan b\u00f6rjat sp\u00e5ra avfall, och information om djurens n\u00e4ringsintag samlades in genom ett samarbete med djurparkens nutritionschef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GHG-ber\u00e4knare<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salamon slutade med att utf\u00f6ra ber\u00e4kningarna sj\u00e4lv baserat p\u00e5 l\u00e4sning av <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/standards\">Protokoll om v\u00e4xthusgaser<\/a> standarder och sedan anv\u00e4nda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/simplified-ghg-emissions-calculator\">EPA:s f\u00f6renklade kalkylator f\u00f6r v\u00e4xthusgaser<\/a> f\u00f6r att verifiera dessa resultat. <a href=\"https:\/\/unhsimap.org\/home\">SIMAP<\/a>\u00e4r ett annat omfattande verktyg f\u00f6r analys av v\u00e4xthusgaser, men Salamon ans\u00e5g att EPA:s f\u00f6renklade kalkylator med \u00f6ppen k\u00e4llkod var till st\u00f6rst hj\u00e4lp n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller de djurparksrelaterade kategorierna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resultat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I slutet av sommaren presenterade Salamon sin utsl\u00e4ppsanalys f\u00f6r 2022 och sin presentation f\u00f6r Denver Zoos personal och styrelse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I slutresultatet hamnade Denver Zoos totala utsl\u00e4pp p\u00e5 drygt 12 000 ton CO2. Djurparkens Scope 1 (direkt f\u00f6rbr\u00e4nning) var totalt 3 526 ton CO2. Scope 2 (ink\u00f6pt el) uppgick till 4 212 ton CO2. Slutligen var Scope 3 totalt 4 495 ton CO2. \"N\u00e4r man tittar p\u00e5 cirkeldiagrammet \u00e4r alla tredjedelar relativt lika, vilket \u00e4r ovanligt n\u00e4r man g\u00f6r en GHG-revision som inkluderar Scope 3\", s\u00e4ger Salamon. \"Baserat p\u00e5 de kartlagda kategorierna skulle den slutliga utsl\u00e4ppssiffran ha varit h\u00f6gre om hela upphandlingen hade hanterats tillsammans med vissa andra aspekter av v\u00e5r v\u00e4rdekedja i scope 3.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miki Salamon kom i kontakt med ett konsultf\u00f6retag som arbetar n\u00e4ra djurparker och akvarier. F\u00f6retaget rapporterade att det finns stora organisationer som g\u00f6r inventeringar men som inte publicerar dessa siffror. Salamon kunde hitta en j\u00e4mf\u00f6rbar revision fr\u00e5n Philadelphia Zoo som var n\u00e5gra \u00e5r gammal. Deras utsl\u00e4pp var i storleksordningen 8.000 ton CO2 och de utf\u00f6rde endast analyser av Scope 1 och Scope 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller djurparker och akvarier - och f\u00f6r Denver Zoos storlek och omfattning - \u00e4r 12.000 ton CO2 i princip en medelm\u00e5ttig siffra.
