No entanto, a lideran\u00e7a apercebeu-se de uma oportunidade para abordar a complexa \u00e1rea de foco da energia, que pode ser a \u00e1rea clim\u00e1tica mais dif\u00edcil e dispendiosa de abordar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foi adotado um objetivo de redu\u00e7\u00e3o de energia em todo o campus no final de 2019 - logo no in\u00edcio da pandemia de COVID-19. O pessoal e a dire\u00e7\u00e3o do Zoo de Denver estavam interessados em saber quais eram as emiss\u00f5es resultantes do tratamento dos animais, pelo que Salamon decidiu abordar a quest\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00c2mbito 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/scope_2_guidance\">Emiss\u00f5es de \u00e2mbito 2<\/a> - Por exemplo, emiss\u00f5es geradas pela compra de eletricidade - Salamon analisou a eletricidade comprada \u00e0 Xcel Energy, o principal fornecedor de energia do Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Na an\u00e1lise do \u00c2mbito 2, existem normalmente dois m\u00e9todos de c\u00e1lculo. Uma op\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 calcular utilizando o m\u00e9todo geral baseado na localiza\u00e7\u00e3o, que se baseia nas regi\u00f5es eGrid designadas pela EPA. A outra op\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 um m\u00e9todo baseado no mercado que utiliza factores de emiss\u00e3o espec\u00edficos do seu fornecedor de energia. Para o Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver, que est\u00e1 localizado na regi\u00e3o das Montanhas Rochosas, a Xcel Energy fornece factores de emiss\u00e3o espec\u00edficos porque est\u00e1 a trabalhar em objectivos renov\u00e1veis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O Jardim Zool\u00f3gico acabou por utilizar os c\u00e1lculos de ambos os m\u00e9todos para efetuar a compara\u00e7\u00e3o, mas o n\u00famero efetivamente comunicado ser\u00e1 o fator baseado no mercado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00c2mbito 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/scope-3-inventory-guidance#:~:text=Scope%203%20emissions%20are%20the,scope%201%20and%202%20boundary.\">Emiss\u00f5es do \u00e2mbito 3<\/a> - Por exemplo, emiss\u00f5es que resultam de activos que n\u00e3o s\u00e3o detidos ou controlados pela institui\u00e7\u00e3o, mas que afectam indiretamente a atividade da organiza\u00e7\u00e3o <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/standards\/scope-3-standard\">cadeia de valor<\/a> - O Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver decidiu abordar parcialmente v\u00e1rias categorias, incluindo:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Viagens de neg\u00f3cios<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Desloca\u00e7\u00f5es pendulares do pessoal e dos volunt\u00e1rios<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viagens de convidados<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transporte de animais<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Res\u00edduos produzidos nas opera\u00e7\u00f5es<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o de alimentos para animais<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Salamon analisou muitas formas de desloca\u00e7\u00e3o de e para o campus, nomeadamente as desloca\u00e7\u00f5es dos funcion\u00e1rios (que incluem pessoal e volunt\u00e1rios), as viagens de neg\u00f3cios e as viagens de convidados. As viagens de convidados s\u00e3o uma categoria que n\u00e3o \u00e9 obrigat\u00f3ria para a elabora\u00e7\u00e3o de relat\u00f3rios, mas que resulta numa grande parte das opera\u00e7\u00f5es comerciais. \"O Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver tem um excelente inqu\u00e9rito de acompanhamento demogr\u00e1fico dos visitantes\", diz Salamon. \"Fazem um inqu\u00e9rito bianual e h\u00e1 uma tonelada de dados; a ideia era ver de onde v\u00eam as pessoas e as emiss\u00f5es que resultam da visita.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver tamb\u00e9m quis centrar-se nas desloca\u00e7\u00f5es e no transporte de animais, uma vez que \u00e9 efectuada uma grande quantidade de transportes de animais ao longo do ano (em 2013, por exemplo, foi trazido para o jardim zool\u00f3gico um elefante da B\u00e9lgica). Mais uma vez, embora esta categoria n\u00e3o fosse especificamente mandatada ou exigida, Salamon considerou que era importante abordar a quest\u00e3o do <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-12\/Chapter4.pdf\">Categoria 4: Transporte e distribui\u00e7\u00e3o a montante<\/a> padr\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Por \u00faltimo, as restantes categorias abordadas foram os res\u00edduos gerados nas opera\u00e7\u00f5es e nas aquisi\u00e7\u00f5es, que s\u00e3o enormes no jardim zool\u00f3gico (e na maioria das organiza\u00e7\u00f5es) e tendem a ser enormes e dispersas. Por este motivo, Salamon n\u00e3o p\u00f4de efetuar toda a an\u00e1lise, decidindo concentrar-se mais nas aquisi\u00e7\u00f5es associadas \u00e0 equipa de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o e nutri\u00e7\u00e3o animal do Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recolha de dados<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salamon agendou reuni\u00f5es com diferentes funcion\u00e1rios do jardim zool\u00f3gico de Denver durante o ver\u00e3o, solicitando os v\u00e1rios fluxos de dados necess\u00e1rios para realizar a auditoria GHG. Salamon diz que teve sorte, pois a maior parte dos dados j\u00e1 tinha sido compilada e p\u00f4de ser obtida com relativa facilidade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uma grande folha de c\u00e1lculo de energia j\u00e1 tinha sido agregada com totais, quilowatts-hora e megawatts-hora por edif\u00edcio. Para as viagens da frota, Salamon examinou os livros de quil\u00f3metros para determinar as emiss\u00f5es de transporte da frota do jardim zool\u00f3gico. Para as viagens de neg\u00f3cios, pediu ao assistente executivo para obter dados dos registos de viagens dos executivos. Salamon tamb\u00e9m se reuniu com a diretora de conserva\u00e7\u00e3o de campo do jardim zool\u00f3gico, que \u00e9 uma grande entusiasta da sustentabilidade - ela conseguiu obter n\u00fameros sobre voos, n\u00famero de funcion\u00e1rios que viajaram, para onde foram, quanto tempo estiveram l\u00e1, etc. Para as viagens dos funcion\u00e1rios, j\u00e1 tinha sido criado um inqu\u00e9rito sobre as desloca\u00e7\u00f5es do pessoal e Salamon criou outro inqu\u00e9rito para recolher dados sobre as desloca\u00e7\u00f5es dos volunt\u00e1rios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"A informa\u00e7\u00e3o sobre os animais foi particularmente interessante de localizar\", diz Salamon. O Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver utiliza o que se chama \"o registo\", que pode obter qualquer tipo de dados que me interesse. Tamb\u00e9m me foi dada uma palavra-passe de acesso ao software de rastreio do jardim zool\u00f3gico: acesso a todos os nossos ficheiros de animais, entradas nos seus pesos, notas e o fluxo di\u00e1rio de dados - semelhante a um hospital que mant\u00e9m registos de perfis de sa\u00fade.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Um dos coordenadores do jardim zool\u00f3gico j\u00e1 tinha efectuado o acompanhamento dos res\u00edduos e a informa\u00e7\u00e3o sobre a nutri\u00e7\u00e3o dos animais foi agregada atrav\u00e9s da colabora\u00e7\u00e3o com o diretor de nutri\u00e7\u00e3o do jardim zool\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Calculadoras de GEE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salamon acabou por efetuar ela pr\u00f3pria os c\u00e1lculos com base na leitura do <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/standards\">Protocolo sobre gases com efeito de estufa<\/a> e, em seguida, utilizando as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/simplified-ghg-emissions-calculator\">Calculadora simplificada de gases com efeito de estufa da EPA<\/a> para verificar esses resultados. <a href=\"https:\/\/unhsimap.org\/home\">SIMAP<\/a>, uma plataforma de contabiliza\u00e7\u00e3o do carbono e do azoto, \u00e9 outra ferramenta de an\u00e1lise abrangente dos GEE, mas Salamon considerou que a calculadora simplificada da EPA, de c\u00f3digo aberto, \u00e9 a mais \u00fatil em termos das categorias relacionadas com o jardim zool\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resultados<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No final do ver\u00e3o, Salamon entregou a sua an\u00e1lise e apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o das emiss\u00f5es de 2022 ao pessoal e ao conselho de administra\u00e7\u00e3o do Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para os resultados finais, as emiss\u00f5es totais do Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver acabaram por ser um pouco mais de 12.000 toneladas m\u00e9tricas de CO2. O total do \u00c2mbito 1 (combust\u00e3o direta) do jardim zool\u00f3gico foi de 3.526 toneladas m\u00e9tricas de CO2. O total do \u00c2mbito 2 (eletricidade comprada) foi de 4.212 toneladas m\u00e9tricas de CO2. Por \u00faltimo, o total do \u00c2mbito 3 foi de 4.495 toneladas m\u00e9tricas de CO2. \"Olhando para o gr\u00e1fico circular, todos os ter\u00e7os s\u00e3o relativamente iguais, o que n\u00e3o \u00e9 comum quando se faz uma auditoria GHG que inclui o \u00c2mbito 3\", admite Salamon. \"Com base nas categorias mapeadas, se a totalidade do aprovisionamento tivesse sido abordada juntamente com alguns outros aspectos da nossa cadeia de valor de \u00e2mbito tr\u00eas, o valor final das emiss\u00f5es teria sido mais elevado.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miki Salamon acabou por contactar uma empresa de consultoria que trabalha de perto com jardins zool\u00f3gicos e aqu\u00e1rios. A empresa informou que h\u00e1 organiza\u00e7\u00f5es de renome que est\u00e3o a fazer invent\u00e1rios mas n\u00e3o publicam esses n\u00fameros. Salamon conseguiu encontrar uma auditoria compar\u00e1vel do Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Filad\u00e9lfia que tinha alguns anos. As suas emiss\u00f5es rondavam as 8.000 toneladas m\u00e9tricas de CO2 e apenas efectuaram uma an\u00e1lise do \u00e2mbito 1 e do \u00e2mbito 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No que diz respeito aos jardins zool\u00f3gicos e aqu\u00e1rios - e para a dimens\u00e3o e \u00e2mbito do Jardim Zool\u00f3gico de Denver - 12 000 toneladas m\u00e9tricas de CO2 \u00e9 basicamente o meio do caminho.
