Estes atributos criam condi\u00e7\u00f5es menos do que ideais para \u00e1rvores urbanas de longa dura\u00e7\u00e3o. Para ultrapassar estas disparidades ambientais, a investiga\u00e7\u00e3o das solu\u00e7\u00f5es das comunidades ind\u00edgenas foi uma abordagem l\u00f3gica. \u00c0 medida que os cientistas iam descobrindo s\u00edtios arqueol\u00f3gicos antigos, cheios de <em>terra preta<\/em> na bacia amaz\u00f3nica, eram <strong>descoberta de solos negros profundos e bem estruturados<\/strong> em locais que suportaram uma extensa agricultura de floresta tropical durante mais de mil anos - algo que \u00e9 at\u00edpico para solos tropicais propensos \u00e0 agricultura de corte e queima. Inicialmente, organiz\u00e1mos um estudo em estufa para examinar 7 tratamentos (aparas de madeira, composto, biochar, bioss\u00f3lidos, fertilizante NPK, ch\u00e1 de composto aerado, \u00e1gua) em 2 \u00e1rvores de rua comuns (Acer saccharum Marsh. e Gleditsia triacanthos) cultivadas em 3 tipos de solo (areia, argila siltosa, argila compactada). Examin\u00e1mos as respostas do solo e das \u00e1rvores aos tratamentos durante 18 meses e conclu\u00edmos o estudo com uma colheita destrutiva da biomassa acima e abaixo do solo. Aprendemos que <strong>tanto os bioss\u00f3lidos como o biochar melhoraram a atividade microbiana do solo<\/strong> proporcionando assim feedbacks positivos para o crescimento das \u00e1rvores acima e abaixo do solo, com a maior acumula\u00e7\u00e3o de biomassa nos tratamentos com biochar e bioss\u00f3lidos em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com o outro tratamento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> Para testar os tratamentos de biochar em <strong>\u00e1rvores de rua existentes<\/strong>Em novembro de 2007, realiz\u00e1mos dois estudos ao n\u00edvel da paisagem na regi\u00e3o de Chicago. Um num bairro pr\u00f3ximo do centro da cidade de Chicago <strong>exame das covas das \u00e1rvores<\/strong> (em projeto) e um no sub\u00farbio sudoeste de Bolingbrook <strong>an\u00e1lise das \u00e1rvores do parque<\/strong> (no prelo). Ambos os estudos examinaram \u00e1rvores de rua j\u00e1 estabelecidas e uma variedade de mecanismos de incorpora\u00e7\u00e3o de diferentes corretivos para melhorar a sa\u00fade do solo e das \u00e1rvores. A experi\u00eancia inclui um composto tradicional, bem como dois tratamentos com emendas bioss\u00f3lidas e uma mistura bioss\u00f3lida-biochar. Dois anos ap\u00f3s o in\u00edcio da experi\u00eancia, verific\u00e1mos que o <strong>os solos com mistura de bioss\u00f3lido e biochar apresentaram a densidade aparente do solo mais baixa<\/strong>, <strong>maior disponibilidade de mat\u00e9ria org\u00e2nica e nutrientes<\/strong>e <strong>maior crescimento das \u00e1rvores e teor de clorofila<\/strong> do que os solos e as \u00e1rvores nas parcelas de controlo sem altera\u00e7\u00f5es. Mas, al\u00e9m da densidade aparente, que foi menor nas parcelas de mistura de bioss\u00f3lido-biochar do que nas parcelas de bioss\u00f3lido isolado, as respostas do solo e das \u00e1rvores n\u00e3o foram marcadamente diferentes entre as parcelas de mistura de bioss\u00f3lido-biochar e as parcelas de bioss\u00f3lido isolado. Por outras palavras, os solos e as \u00e1rvores respondem positivamente aos bioss\u00f3lidos, e \u00e9 dif\u00edcil dizer se biochar ir\u00e1 aumentar esse efeito. Estou ansioso para ver o que acontece nos anos seguintes - talvez o biochar ser\u00e1 mais importante ao longo do tempo se facilitar isso <strong>\"fertilizante de liberta\u00e7\u00e3o lenta\"<\/strong> efeito sobre a disponibilidade de nutrientes e mant\u00e9m uma baixa densidade aparente devido \u00e0 sua tend\u00eancia para se decompor lentamente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MC:<\/strong> Estabelecemos <strong>uma experi\u00eancia em viveiro<\/strong> nos terrenos do The Morton Arboretum para aprofundar o nosso conhecimento sobre os diferentes m\u00e9todos de incorpora\u00e7\u00e3o biochar as combina\u00e7\u00f5es vari\u00e1veis de emendas org\u00e2nicas mais biochar com o objetivo de determinar as taxas de aplica\u00e7\u00e3o ideais. Os resultados destas experi\u00eancias controladas no viveiro, juntamente com as respostas ao n\u00edvel da paisagem e da estufa, ajudar\u00e3o na nossa interpreta\u00e7\u00e3o dos resultados para a nossa regi\u00e3o. A partir de agora, parece que biochar, seja sozinho ou em combina\u00e7\u00e3o com fertilizantes sint\u00e9ticos, compostos ou bioss\u00f3lidos como fonte de nutrientes, <strong>s\u00e3o bons a melhorar os efeitos de solos urbanos de baixa qualidade, o que \u00e9 evidente por uma maior acumula\u00e7\u00e3o de biomassa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"are-there-additional-benefits-to-biochar\"><strong>Existem outros benef\u00edcios do biochar?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/climatetoolkit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1131\" width=\"296\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/climatetoolkit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-1.png 264w, https:\/\/climatetoolkit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-1-100x67.png 100w, https:\/\/climatetoolkit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-1-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/climatetoolkit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/image-1-200x133.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MM:<\/strong> Para al\u00e9m de manter potencialmente uma elevada disponibilidade de nutrientes e uma baixa densidade aparente ao longo do tempo, <strong>o biochar pode tamb\u00e9m diminuir os efeitos do sal da estrada nas \u00e1rvores e no solo<\/strong>. O biocarv\u00e3o tem uma \u00e1rea de superf\u00edcie elevada e o s\u00f3dio pode absorver-se nessa superf\u00edcie em vez de acabar nas ra\u00edzes das \u00e1rvores e nos cursos de \u00e1gua. Para testar isso, adicionamos biochar como um curativo superior ou misturado biochar em solos, plantou quatro esp\u00e9cies diferentes de mudas de \u00e1rvores em vasos e regou as \u00e1rvores com ou sem adi\u00e7\u00e3o de cloreto de s\u00f3dio uma vez por semana. Ap\u00f3s 8 semanas, descobrimos que quando biochar foi usado como cobertura, diminuiu a quantidade de s\u00f3dio que acabou na \u00e1gua do solo e aumentou o crescimento de nossas esp\u00e9cies de \u00e1rvores de crescimento mais r\u00e1pido, <a href=\"https:\/\/mortonarb.org\/plant-and-protect\/trees-and-plants\/hybrid-catalpa\/\"><strong>Catalpa do Norte<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-you-have-collaborators-on-your-biochar-research\"><strong>Tem colaboradores na sua investiga\u00e7\u00e3o sobre biochar?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MM:<\/strong> Estes dois projectos reuniram equipas do Arboretum e n\u00e3o s\u00f3! O projeto \u00e0 beira da estrada \u00e9 uma colabora\u00e7\u00e3o com o <a href=\"https:\/\/mortonarb.org\/science\/projects\/the-tollway-trees-initiative\/#!\"><strong>Autoestrada do Illinois<\/strong><\/a>e os bioss\u00f3lidos que utiliz\u00e1mos s\u00e3o provenientes do Distrito Municipal de \u00c1guas Residuais da cidade de Chicago. Todos aguardam com expetativa os resultados deste estudo, porque nos podem ajudar a conceber um melhor projeto de planta\u00e7\u00e3o de \u00e1rvores \u00e0 beira da estrada no futuro.
